I have a Maxtor 250 GB HD with a corrupt operating system (cannot even load safe mode). I'm going to do a factory restore but need to transfer some critical files first. I can't daisy-chain it with my other PC in the house as it does not have the same type of internal HD cable (the Maxtor uses a small flat red cable that plugs into a small "L" shape on the board, my other computer's HD uses the much wider ribbon style connection. Is there an adapter I can get to plug the Maxtor into a USB port on my other PC?

The other answers provide you with solutions on how to go
external usb with a carrier....

You MAY be able to just use your other computer, go online,
get KNOPPIX LIVE CD ( or the new DVD ) and put it into your
non-working computer.
KNOPPIX LIVE will run your entire crapped out computer, and,
connect to any ETHERNET connection such as ADSL, and
even better, if you have an ADSL plugged into a HUB, with
both computers, you can not only see your entire computer,
and files, and all harddrives on the faulty computer, but either
transfere any important files immediately thru the hub or email
to yourself on the web.
KNOPPIX LIVE CD runs your entire computer from RAM, not
the harddrive, and gives you full access to all files...

Give this a try. KNOPPIX, like any LINUX, is FREE. !! You just
have to go into the computer's BIOS and set to BOOT FROM CD FIRST...

hope this helps

Yes it sounds like your Maxtor 250 is a SATA drive.
Use the link below to get an idea of what you need, then smart shop around to find a better price on what you need.

Yes. There is a box with USB outet. You have to fix your internal hard disc in it and plug to your USB. It comes with a power cord, which you have to plug to power. It also comes with driver cd, incase your operating system does not pick the driver by itself.
