Put in a saucer of plain water and then microwave on high until the water boils. Repeat after every time you use the sponge and you'll notice it lasting longer without stinking.

I have read that if you have a 5% bleach solution in a tray, (that would be just a few drops in the 1/2 inch water in the tray) that that will inhibity bacteria from growing. Its the bacteria growing that makes it smell as you are smelling the bacteria's byproducts of the bacteria eating food waste and other stuff that is in the sponge. Also boiling the sponge in water for 5 minutes or so a week should also work. Good luck.

Rinse well w/water and then a little white vinegar. This will also sanitize it. I don't really like kitchen sponges because they can breed bacteria.

I always use water and white vinegar 50/50 in the microwave to disinfect, I never noticed them smelling like vinegar after I rinse them.

Throw them in the dishwasher. It's what Williams-Sonoma recommends for their sponges.
