I've never met a straight male Barbra Streisand fan. Or Judy Garland, or Diana Ross.

Stereotypes start with a grain of truth (real, imagined, or forced upon a group by propagandists) in most cases. The truth is taken and overblown and cliche-ed to the point of being a caricature of the original. Not all Streisand fans are gay, but there are a lot who are. Not all mass murderers are 30-50 white males, but there are a lot are. Etc. Stereotypes help people dehumanize people with unfamiliar traits that they fear. Remember the part in the Silence of the Lambs where the Senator keeps repeating her kidnapped daughter's name? Starling says that it is really smart, that it is harder for the killer to kill her daughter if he sees her as a person? Same principle in reverse.
Streisand is a gay Icon for the same reason that a lot of others (M Monroe, J Garland, B Middler, etc) are: They themselves have experienced a lot of hardship and emotional distress/rejection & abandonment and use that in their performances and are public about it. Gay people are subject to unnatural amounts of isolation and social discrimination. It is only natural that we flock to people that have successfully turned experiences that we can relate to into their artistic fuel.

I am not gay and I love Barbra Streisand, she has the most beautiful, powerful voice, she is a great actress, she has the lot

Because they are ignorant,they probably do not even know any gay people,most of my gay friends love Techno but some like country and all kinds of music,none of them particularly care for Barbra,Cher,Madonna and showtunes.Just stupid stereotypes!

Because she is greatly admired by this segment of the population and she is widely emulated by cross dressers and drag queens. As we all know (hopefully)...she has a much wider fan base than this...but as in all things, we have a tendency to focus on the sensational.

Recognizing that she has many gay fans is not the same thing as automatically assuming that ALL of her fans are gay. I don't agree with the premise of your question.
