It's not really thick - only about 200 pages, but King Fortis the Brave is one of the best books I've read in a long time. Full of great characters, humor and action I found it hard to put down.

Stephen Kings the dark tower series is seven books each over 500 pages... A great read.

Hawaii by James Michener is very good reading
