My husband and I are looking for a reasonably priced area down south to live. We're just starting out, so we don't have $250,000.00 to put into a house. We would like a good neighborhood for are young daughter, good school and has a shopping area near, but isn't near the high way.

The best overall house prices I have recently seen are
1. San Antonio Tx, 2. Austin Tx. 3. Atlanta Ga. All these cities are spread out and there are some very good buys if you have the credit. I am relocating soon to SA myself. In northern Va, the same house will cost you 2.5 times as much as these cities, of course the location varies. Austin is a college town and known as a cultural center and entertainment. Atlanta traffic is terrible and some areas you don't want to be in, but the burbs are nice.

Jacksonville, FL is not too bad. It's booming now, but there are areas like mine(Arlington) where you can still get a decent place for under 150k, then you can do like me and sell in a few years for 180k. It's 10 minutes from downtown, the Jaguars stadium, and the beach is 12 miles away. There are lots of parks around, a really nice rapidly growing zoo and gardens. Only reason I'm leaving in a couple of years is there is no snow here. I miss the snow.

Have you considered living in a small town? Prices are lower; oftentimes schools are good; (no school is that good unless you as the parent are involved) and more often than not there is a shopping complex/mall and few highways...thinking of a town, Ely, Minnesota, but that is a town that borders Canada.
Best wishes!

Elizabethtown, Kentucky is a good place. Not far from interstate 65. Large city of Louisville is only 45 minutes away. All Big name department stores are in Elizabethtown. Home prices very well priced.

Elkhart, IN. It's a cheap and nice place to live. It was even rated nationally as one of the best places to raise a family.

Good luck!

how about the Carolinas or Georgia? These two southern states have great pricing for homes and great school systems. (depending, of course, which city/town you are planning to move to)
