I know of two excellent products.
1. Fruit of the Earth, Vitamin E, Skin Care Cream- It's really cheap. I think I got two for $4 or something. It comes in a tub and is pretty thick.
2. Korres, Guava Body Butter- It's a bit more expensive but it makes your skin so soft and gives it that dewy glow. It also smells incredible. You can find it at sephora- http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P61870&categoryId=C11245.
Definitely use the lotion right after you get out of the shower. Another idea is getting one of those in-shower body lotions. I use that along with my other lotion when I really want my skin to be soft. Bath and Body Works has some good choices or you can get the Oil of Olay ones. You just put it on it the shower and rinse off.

The shea butter lotions are your best bet. There are some rather inexpensive ones on the market. You should apply them shortly after a shower, while your skin is still damp and allow it time to absorb and dry before dressing...or else you wind up applying lotion to your clothing. Palmer's makes a very good shea butter lotion and it's very inexpensive.

The Aveeno products have worked very well for my son, as well as Gold Bond. Our doctor told me to avoid lotions with alcohol in them, because they can sting very dry skin.
