We are all special to people - most of us do not even realize it.
With each interaction, no matter how minute, we touch that person and alter their reality, changing the progression of their lives and ours.
Each time we allow someone in front of us in traffic or smile at the stranger on the street or have a kind word for the cashier at the grocery store, we are changing a path, creating twists and turns in time, in the future which alters the present.
We are equally special to those we mistreat, although this is not in a positive way. A cross word or cruel gesture can be enough to put someone over the edge - and in that manner we have been special to them. It is just tragic.
That is why I encourage my children to be kind to everyone because you never whose life you will touch and thereby alter for the better.

For me the answer is: YES (and even though she is traveling right now, I'm certain no matter where we happen to be, we are always special to one another - and that's a wonderful and comforting feeling indeed). ...But after reading your comment (i.e. "In my darkest moments, my 32 year old eyes well with tears at the specter of loneliness that haunts me terribly.") I somehow get the feeling that you ultimately posed this question to yourself. I suppose, being social animals, the majority of us inherently feel the need to be "someone's special person". Now, whether we actually are someone’s special person or not is an entirely different matter. Still, the more fundamental question we should ask ourselves is: Am I special to myself? In other words: Am I happy with whom I am, where I happen to be in my life, and where I think I am headed? If your answer to that is yes, then I'm sure you are someone's special person too. And if not (but you wish to be) then make it so by start looking at who you are vs. who you wanna be, and take it from there. Not to mention, people are often attracted to those who happen to be comfortable with themselves. ... Back then in those care-fee (and rather emotionally-immature) college days one of my classmates used to always say: "We'll all find our soul-mates (i.e. that special person) once we put ourselves in the right emotional and spiritual state of being to receive them". Most of us just laughed at her comment and treated her like a New Age freak. But you know what? Turns out she had a point, after all.

Yes, but not in the conventional "bf/gf" or "soon to be spouse" kinda way. A very close friend with whom I share a deep love with.
