The turtle mom buries her eggs in sand so the turtles when they hatch can quickly dig out and hide before they are eaten. If the eggs were left in the open, birds would eat them, and the raccoon, probably the worse turtle egg eaters, would get every one. Sand doesn't have much organic material in it like black dirt, and there wouldn't be as much bacterial in it. Little turtles can dig out of it quicker then gravel. What most people don't know, is that the eggs have to be kept moist. If not, the shells would harden too much for the turtle to escape, and also the embryo would dry up and die. The wind would dry out the eggs, while the sand would keep some moisture around the eggs. The temperature would be more constant.

Why Do Turtles Dig

Yes. And when the turtles hatch, you're going to have a lot of babies on hand. Because the mother leaves them after that. I'd take them to a shelter so they can put them in a proper habitat. Unless you live in some uninhabited area.

Sea turtles dig holes but I'm not sure if painted turtles lay eggs. (The turtle you saw was probably a painted turtle)

absolutely yes. THe heat of the soil incubates the eggs and keeps them moist. I would leave the nest alone so they can hatch. I'd give exhaused mama some spinach greens.
