Correct me if I am missing something, but it seems that one to three children is plenty for a married couple. Of course, financial limitations is very relevant. But, even the millionaire may not be prepared to have very many children.
How can a couple keep from having too many children without drugs and without surgery?

Artificial means any and all contraceptives.
If abstinence is the answer, then what if a couple has trouble observing so much abstinence?

Artificial also means unnatural sex or masturbation.

Looking over the answers I guess we are left with some kind of rythem method or we are faced with total abstinence.
I've read that Dr. Kellog not only abstained from sx with his wife but they may have never had sex!
Other questions on this issue might be how will a couple learn the rhythm method and how will they adjust to it.
Similary, how would a couple adjust to total abstinence if they decide to choose this route?
How will couples like this find fulfillment, satisfaction, peace and happiness in a marital relationship if they choose this type of abstinence?

I'm sorry if this seems like someone is telling someone how to live their life. The idea is to sort these issues out. Perhaps some will benefit from this study.

You don't like any of the answers...
You knew when you asked that the ONLY sure-fire way to not have more kids without surgery, condoms, etc is to not have sex, right?
There is one other 'trick'...tracking her basal temp. http://www.tcoyf.com/
When the temps are higher, is when to abstain.

Hmm, your question is like asking how to train your dog to pee inside the toilet. If you want to stop having children, use contraceptives. Of course, surgery, such as vasectomy or Fallopian tube ligation, is an option only if you don't have the discipline to stick to a contraceptive method, such as your wife taking the pill or using a contraceptive skin patch.
If you both are confident that you have the discipline it takes to use a contraceptive (I don't know why you're so scared or put off by "artificial' methods; more on "artificial" later), then consult with your wife's OB/GYN together for a suitable contraceptive solution. The "natural" contraceptive method is unreliable, since not all women have their periods like clockwork. By the way, a vasectomy won't take your virility away from you. Get informed by the right people (i.e., doctors, nurses or sex therapists).
As for sexual abstinence, that's a very dumb idea if you're married or together and both love each other. Sex is not just to make babies. Again, get the right information from the right people, not just your pastor/bishop/church.
As for masturbation, only some religions (famously Christian ones, by the way) will forbide people from masturbating. Masturbation is not a sin, it's a healthy practice as long as it is not abused (just like with any other sexual activity!)
So, if you really care about your wife (I am again assuming you are a man) and your family's financial situation, you'll go out there and seek the right information from appropriate sources, with an open mind and without prejudices. And please try to see beyond the label of "artificial" on things: I bet you buy your chicken and meat from the supermarket.

The most effective method is don't have sex. Ok, now that you have stopped laughing, the next best method is use a condom. Every time.
Don't go by the rhythm method, it's not that effective. Women's bodies are not watches, they vary, so even if you are keeping a calendar of her menses and ovulation, her body could decide to ovulate a week later. Or a week earlier. And then you can get pregnant.
You as a couple decide the number of children you want or can have. More power to you. Good luck.

You stated "one to three children is plenty for a married couple". Says who? Do you have to baby sit for a couple who has more than three children? Do you have a support them financially? It doesn't matter if a couple choose to have five or six children, I don't think it is appropriate for you to say when they should stop unless it is effecting you in some way shape or form. BUT.... to answer your question, the only way a couple can refrain from having children is to use some sort of birth control (male and female) no sex or to have surgery.

A condom is useful but can be problematic at times. My wife uses an IUD (Intrauterine device). A small, plastic, flexible, T-shaped device that is placed into the uterus (womb). The IUD is a form of birth control. There are 2 types available in the United States, one of them releases a hormone the other does not and most can be left in place for up to 6 years.

Why exclude Surgery or drugs?
That's what you're missing.
Either: Make more money or
Stop having kids.
A vasectomy gives you years of trouble free sex. Trust me... I had one 20 years ago.
