Rhetorical questions usually come from people thinking that the answer to their question is obvious and that everybody has (or has to have) the same opinion about that. Therefore, it's fun providing an answer they didn't expect.

First of all, your question is a rhetorical questions, because it sates that some yahoo members ask rhetorical questions, and that other members answer them!
Second of all, by asking rhetorical questions, people try to convince others of their point of view, because they think they do others, or even the whole world a favour by spreading those believes or points of views. And those who answer them, they try either to show off their knowledge, or they try to be funny, or even just looking for extra points.
I know a joke about rhetorical questions:
The judge asked the accused: Are you the criminal, son, or what?
The accused answered: I am `what` sir!

For some people, rhetorical questions are just like any other question........something to be answered. For people like me, my response for answering a rhetorical question is that I thought the questioner was looking for a constructive answer.
One rhetorical question my mother always uses, "Is this great, or what?".........Well, if it isn't all that great, then it's certainly a case for "or what"..........wasn't that a choice? LOL

We grow up learning to answer the questions, to give a correct answer in all cases, so I think that we just answer out of habit (or we just like to hear ourselves talk)

We like to hear ourselves talk; it makes us feel useful, important, or smart (or, at times, all of the above).
