Pirates didn't have pockets except on their coats. Pockets would get in the way of sailing and setting the sails. And if they did have pockets, we all know that they would carry white m and m's!

No pocketses in their pantses, but they had pocketses in their coats, and they often had scrips (small bags) on their belts. In them, they carried food, weapons, cloths, tools, bits of string, correspondence, small pets (well, roaches COULD be considered pets) ... anything they owned that they couldn't leave lying around where the rest of the crew might get at it.
Sure, pirate articles usually had serious penalties for theft, but what thief thinks he will get caught?
