I don't know about the french hating the english but I believe the english hate the french for the same reason most national hatreds arrive, we are taught to.

Sure there have been wars between our nations, but not for a few hundred years right? No rational basis for hatred if you ask me!

I agree with the previous answer that nuclear testing and the sinking of the Rainbow Warrior have caused much disgust with the french administration across the world, but have we not learned by now that you cannot judge a nation's people by it's goverment.

We as the english are taught (read conditioned!), in the most subtle ways, from an early age to loathe the french, but why?

The answer is a simple one to me, our administration would have much to fear if we started to admire the french people and their ethos of Liberté, égalité, Fraternité (Liberty, equality, Brotherhood) ideas much needed in the uk today as we long ago forgot how to stand together as a people, say no and Bloody Well mean it!

Up the Frogs ;)

Because throughout history the English & French have been at war with each other or preparing to invade each other it didn't help when the French king at the time supported Queen Mary Of Scots bid to rule all of England & Scotland that is basically all it is that and the fact that the stereotypes from both countries are still believed to be true today.
I wont even mention how the French get their illegal immigrants to hide so surprisingly well on ships & lorries that they end up in the U.K

Largely historical - read up about the 100 years war between England and France. On a more general note its all to do with human beings (or animals for that matter) and herding, grouping instincts. If you study Chimps in the wild you'll see that they spend all their time aggressively guarding their territories from other Chimps: in humans its a little more sophisticated, we tend to verbalise more. You always find tensions with neighbouring countries whether its just light hearted banter like England and Scotland or outright aggression, e.g. the Middle East. At the end of the day its always tribalism that's at the root of the problem or am I being naive

Partly, it dates back to many years of wars throughout their history. I can't name any specifics, I apologize, but I did learn one piece of information while I was in France. "The Battle of Waterloo," I understand, was a large battle in which the English defeated the French. Currently, if one is in France and takes the chunnel to England, they will land at "Waterloo Station." I found that funny...the first thing a frenchman is greated by when the reach England is a reminder of who defeated who in Waterloo.

We don't really hate each other, it's a rivalry that runs back over centuries of war, many of them based upon England being a protestant county and France, Catholic and each country has invaded and ruled parts of the other over time.

Many countries have a rivalry with their neighbours, USA and Canada; Norway and Sweden; Austrailia and New Zealand.

The English hate everyone (EVERYONE), the French are just raging cause their language sounds really, really stupid. And they're mates with Vinny and Notgiggles McFly.

Coalitions are fragile.

We have to re-define world domination as it is not distinguishable from it's past.
