Cold sores are caused by the Herpes simplex virus and the majority of the population has it. Never, ever pop the blister or rub it. You will increase the duration as well as potentially spread it to other parts of your body i.e. nose, eyes, genitalia.
The best thing to do is, as soon as you feel the tingling sensation on your lip, is to start treating it before the blister appears. Popular remedies include Acyclovir cream (Zovirax), Penciclovir(Denavir) or Benzalkonium Chloride .013% (BAC). The first 2 are Rx only. The third can be dispensed by medical professionals. Here is a little cheat though. BAC is a very common antiseptic that can be found in any 1st aid kit or over the counter in a drug store. Just rub it gently on the sore a few times a day for the first couple of days and that will usually decrease the duration significantly.

The virus that causes cold sores is a determined and sneaky fella to say the least. The virus hides from your white blood cells and has a protective coating which makes it much tougher for your immune system to destroy the virus. This is the reason your cold sores hang around as long as they do. There have been studies back over 20 years suggesting that the preservative BHT taken in pill form destroys the protective coating allowing your immune system to more effectively attack and destroy the virus thus shortening the time you need to suffer. This is not a cure!! Check out the book "Life Extension" by Durk Pierson and Sandy Shaw it will give you additional info and can be found on Amazon. Do additinal research on the internet about BHT. Not everything you find will be positive. Remember that there is no cure for Herpes so be careful about all the claims you will find on the internet about "The cure for Herpes".

Cold sores normally last about five days unless you pick them and then they will last longer, do not pick them they are very contagious, and you can infect other areas of your body , not very nice! The best thing is zovirax, but this only really works if you apply it as soon as you feel a tingle, sometimes if you apply it at the right time it stops the cold sore from fully developing. If the cold sore has come out then zovirax may speed up recovery slightly. As for natural products I think the best alternative is toothpaste, it seems to clear it up really well.

The best way to not get cold sores in the first place is to keep your lips moisturized with either a lipgloss or petroleum jelly (especially when its cold outside). Cold sores occur when your lips are extremely dry.

Do not touch the scab/sores! They are very contagious and you do not want the virus getting into your eyes.. it can make you become blind.
If you have coldsores it means you are run down, take some supplements (zinc etc.. ) and drink water and juice!
