Not to be stating the obvious, but send your friend an email. If it bounces back, then you are on their spam list or it is no longer active.
Also, set receipt-notification (if your email client has this function) to get a notification that the email was opened and just not responded to.

If you send him/her a mail and the id has expired, the mail should normally be sent back to you.

There is really no way of determining that, if your friends email address is full, you might receive bounced email notices. You might never know if the email address is closed, or it might bounce too.
