In 1977 my boyfriend arranged a special date to surprise me, he got tickets for a new movie that was going to premiere at Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood. There was a giant crowd and even with pre-bought tickets we had to wait in a long line, it wrapped around the block. The movie was called "Star Wars." I loved it!
Anyway, in one of the scenes toward the end of the movie, Princess Leia discloses to Han Solo that Chewbacca is in love with Han and that Chewbacca is female. Han is stunned, he did not know that he has been flying around the galaxy with a big, tough, strong, hairy beast who is actually a female in love with him. The audience roared with laughter, it was a hilarious scene, and explained Chewbacca's unswerving loyalty.
Strangely, in a follow-up videotape release, and later DVD, this scene is missing. I bought a Star Wars encyclopedia which states Chewbacca is male. I brought this up to a colleague, explaining I was at the original Star Wars premiere where it was clearly revealed that Chewbacca is a girl, and he replied, "Excuse me, WTF??? Chewie is a male!" I am bummed that Lucas re-wrote history. Come on, it played so well, Chewbacca a love-sick girl devoted to Han Solo, the audience LOVED it, absolutely loved it! In my heart Chewbacca will always be the girl hopelessly in love with Han Solo.

I have seen the terrible Star Wars holiday special from '78 and Chewbaccas wife & kid are in it so he's a male wookie

i had thought that wookies did not have male or female. but after two minutes research (which is what you all should do for questions like this, and try to ask questions on peoples opinions rather than easily found out things) he is male!
