Land of the free is what this country was based on. And it all depends on how the people want to keep it free.

We have the freedom of Life _ Liberty_ and too pursuit happiness.

It is no longer the land of the brave and the free as it once was.

The constitution is being laughed at, nearly daily. There are new laws being put into effect daily. People don't seem to realize that a new law means a right has been taken away.

The essential liberties we have as people should never be infringed upon, even though they are constantly now in this day and age.

Does no-one see that no matter how many rights you give up to the government they will NEVER be able to protect us from terrorists.

The drug laws are wrong.
The patriot act is wrong.
The gun control laws are wrong.

You cannot solve a social problem with legislation. It does not work, Prohibition proved this with startling effects.

It is the governments job to protect our morals, not police them.

It is the governments job to protect us from foreign threats, not from ourselves.

It is the governments job to follow the constitution. It is OUR job as citizens to make sure the government does this.

A government that can give you everything can take everything away. And It will.

The second amendment is pretty secure. I wouldn't worry about that. That will really get too ugly if someone tries to screw with that one.
Is one truly free in a land with laws? We are freer than most. Even England is free, yet they have cameras everywhere. The people in Russia are seeing their rights being pulled away to where they can't even decide on what paper to read, because it is now controlled by the state. People think big brother is listening to thier phone calls. With 300 million in this country, they do not have the time, nor the resources to focus on any conversation unless something has been said to red flag them. We have had to implement security measures, but on the whole nothing has really changed in my life since 9/11 except for the Airport security.

I have the feeling that Americans are loosing their sense of respect by confusing it with the meaning of lack of freedom. Most see what is considered respect for many cultures in the world as an imposition where the freedom's rights seems to be putted on risk.
Americans kids have been allowed, for a while now, to do and say wherever they want without having their parents or someone to establish a limit. The parents allow many times their own child disrespect them by thinking a repression toward to it, will limited their sense of freedom and prejudice their grow and success when they become adults.
Respect became synonym of fear here, maybe that's why the rates of divorce is so high in the USA, since most seems to see a respect for a partner as a sign of weakness or fear, witch is not. If a child is raised without the right sense of respect it will grown as a person unable to respect others and believing that establishing certain frats in their daily life like work and relationship is the right way of gain respect.
Remember respect does not come from fear but admiration and appreciation, plus respect does not take freedom away of anybody, maybe that's why you got yourself confused by thinking if American is a truly land of the freedom. I think USA is still a land of freedom but maybe not a land of respect anymore.

of all, let me state that this country's freedom is secure. This is due to the fact that You have dumb people like Cindy Sheehan & whats her nuts....Shirley Phelps-Roper can go around & protest/celebrate the deaths of soldiers. Calling them "*******", & condeming their familys to Hell. So yes, as you can clearly see, this country is a land of the free, because these types of people are allowed to live & breed.
But if, oh I dont know say if a soldier like myself is to retaliate & lash out, Im the one who gets the bad name, for standing up for what I believe in. I was percusting thier right to "Freedom of speech". Im sorry, but if you protest the death of any soldier, I believe you have offically given up that right & any others. You should be deported or shot for burning the American Flag & not standing up with your country.
Now that I have exercised my 1st Amendent rights, I feel alot better now.
