For long-term relief, see a chiropractor. However, you can give yourself substantial short-term relief by grasping the meaty part of the back of your neck. Use the palm of your hand and the "palms" of your fingers...not the tips. Squeeze hard and hold for about a minute, while breathing slow and deep. When you release, do it SLOWLY so the muscle doesn't go back into a spasm. The neck pinch, by itself, may be all you need to do. But it often helps to grasp the trapezius muscle (the muscle that comes down from both sides of the neck to the shoulders) this way too.

These are acupressure techniques and can be very effective for neck/shoulder spasms. You can do these techniques to yourself, but for obvious reasons, it's better when you have a friend do it for you, so you can just relax and let the pinch do its work.

apply ice and alternate with heat. See a massage therapist so that the spasms can be worked out. May take more than one visit. DO you have a history of injuring the neck or did you wake up with it like this. Do you work at a desk job, possibly where you have to hold you neck in a downward position. This tends to cause stress and trigger points.

If you don't have stomach ulcers you can take aspirin or some other anti-inflammatory. When you go to bed take a hot-water bottle wrapped in a towel (so it's not too hot) and put it under your neck to go to sleep. It should soften the muscle and the anti-inflammatory will take the swelling of the pinched nerve down. If you have ulcers try paracetamol and the hot-water bottle treatment. Good luck.

Have physiotherapy. The physiotherapist will find his trigger points and work on them through massage, heat therapy and even laser therapy if necessary. Breaking up the spasm by physiotherapy should relieve the pinched nerve that is causing all the pain. Good luck!
