If you are using XP Pro you can set up a VPN between the two computers.
Google on:
VPN XP Pro
or
VPN server in XP Pro
.
You will have to make sure your firewall allows the VPN port to be open. You will have to create a userid and password too. If you have an ethernet router you will have to configure that too.
There are about 6 to 10 steps but once it is set up it is slick!!!
Just keep googling and you will get it to work!

I think it would be easier if you use FTP client software.
FTP(File Transfer Protocol) A protocol used to transfer files over a TCP/IP network (Internet, Unix, etc.). For example, after developing the HTML pages for a Web site on a local machine, they are typically uploaded to the Web server using FTP.
FTP includes functions to log onto the network, list directories and copy files. It can also convert between the ASCII and EBCDIC character codes. FTP operations can be performed by typing commands at a command prompt or via an FTP utility running under a graphical interface such as Windows. FTP transfers can also be initiated from within a Web browser by entering the URL preceded with ftp://.

Three quick ways:
1) depending on size, zip (using something like winzip) the file(s) and email them as an attachment.
2) if you are on a WAN, then have the target system setup a temporary shared directory and drag and drop the file(s) (after mapping the target drive to your pc via the Tools pulldown on windows explorer)
3) use a third party storage facility - there are some free like gspace (from google).

ftp - file transfer servers would be a good solution for a novice. You could also use programs like PC anywhere but this would require knowledge of static ip solutions
