Who knows? Why wasn't the Phantom Menance as good as Revenge of the Sith...I guess it comes down to Storyline, script, acting and Direction. Batman Begins had great Acting and they made Batman not so Cartoonish but rather more human and that made him kick *** alot more...Superman on the other hand is not easily related to by average people because he can do things we can't...but in a weird way people relate to Batman because we could do what he does.

Batman begins was a retelling of Bruce Wayne's story told completely different from the first set of Batman movies. It's a breath of fresh air, and something new. Superman Returns takes place essentially in the same world, nothing really new is brought to the table, so it's more like if you haven't seen the original Superman movies, you don't care as much.
Superman also had a lot of play with the Smallville TV series, which also could work to turn off potential superman fans thinking that if you don't like the show, you probably won't like the movie. Batman hasn't had anything since The Batman, and unfortunately i have no idea when that's on, or what to really think of it.
Batman is also dark. very very dark, and that has a real appeal, while Superman is very goodie goodie. Superman is like Micky Mouse, everybody loves him but nobody really cares too deeply, while Batman is more like Bugs Bunny, much more interesting.

Well this answer was already slightly hinted upon, but from what I gathered is they took the first 2 Superman movies and spliced them together very poorly and add a bit of special effects they didn't have in the first two and tried to sell it to the general public as an all new high dollar nothing like the first 2 piece of crap.
As for Batman Begins the reason why it went over so well was yes I have to agree with a previous answer is that Batman has not been over played or pushed down the publics throat like Superman has been with different versions of the movie or story line. Beginings was an orignial telling of the events that made upon Batman/Bruce Wayne into the Dark Knight that we all know and want to be at times that and the fact Christian Bale was a beliveable Batman unlike I dont know Val Kilmer or George Clooney.

I'm going to get hurt for this, but here goes... Superman is not an interesting character. There I said it. Now, before anyone takes offense, realize this comes from someone who loves comics dearly. My collection has many a Super-family title, but there is only so much you can do with a "Big Blue Boyscout". He's a god for crissakes. And not the vengeful-smitetastic kind either; all he does is fly in and react to the problem. On top of that, he has one recurring villian plausible to put into a movie, and we already saw that done in three others. Batman on the other hand, is going to see somebody forming a plan and swiftly bring pain upon that person. He also has some of, if not the, best villians in comicdom. One of the reasons for the successes of the Bat-movies (meager as they were at the end), was because we saw a different threat each time. In Superman returns, all we have is Lex saying "I've got another glowing bit of rock!" (paraphrasing). If they had gone another route, powered up Big Blue to his comic abilities, and thrown in Metallo, or Darkseid (Joy!), this movie would have had much more potential.

My theory? Just like everyone else making Superhero movies these days, Singer (the director) wants a trilogy. I personally think the next two movies will be based on the comics that detailed the death and ressurection of superman. Which were awesome stories but had much more actioan that plot. So Singer and the writers were basically using this move to create an atmosphere and a sort of sub plot before they blow your minds with the next two. just a theory.

Superman was made as a sequel to the original first 2 Superman Movies, Bad idea, yes the movies were good in their time. But besides for Brando, who has been dead for years, no in the originals were in this one and they cherry picked what the writers wanted from the first 2 movies. They should have started new with everything it would have done better.

It might be the difference between dark and light. Superman is about being the Big Blue Boy Scout. He is the Last Son of Krypton and despite all that tragedy, he is compelled to go out and protect and save and be good. He just can't help himself. He needs to prevent the tragedy he suffered from falling upon another society for altruistic reasons. Batman, on the other hand is about the darkness. The personal tragedy he suffered destroyed him and only the need to revenge himself on life drives him. He needs to protect, but his motivation borders on compulsion/insanity depending on whose interpretation you like the best. He just can't help himself, but in a completely different way. He blames himself for what happened to his parents and needs to prevent that from happening to someone else for completely selfish reasons.
