No one can guarantee 100% to catch all viruses. It take a week or 2 for an anti-virus company to write the code to remove a new virus and dozens of them come out each week.
But I use and recomment ALL of the following.
I use all of the following Free software with Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer with MSN toolbar and the pop-up blocker turned on and have never had a single problem with my computer sense Microsoft came out with SP2. (knock on wood.) (And be sure to keep Windows and the following software Updated)
The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)
The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (www.spybot.info)
AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.
These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.
The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

I have not been using an antivirus since almost two years now, though all of them claim to be the best, they always fail somewhere, and all of them do make your PC a bit sluggish. So what do I use then? I use shawuser from shadowstor.com. ShadowUser kept me protected since i installed it. Best of all, it does not slow my pc at all. It is not an antivirus software but an disk imaging tool. That is, it preserve a state(defined by you) of your pc, even after virus infection or other fatal problems, everything is restored to the state upon reset. Hope that my answer befits you.

Being honest, All anti-virus programs slow your computer. I like
Charter's F-secure high speed security suite.
Norton was always making mine slow. I have a laptop and even
with cable internet it is slow at times. I think a lot has to do with
so many downloads just sitting somewhere. Clean up your cache
and do a defrag. You might go to (Kim Komando site).
A good spyware will help greatly. Go to HOme depot and ask the
people there. Also get rid of unused data or store you stuff on cd.

Without a doubt NOD32.
I specialise in virus protection and removal and cannot recommend, the free AVG. Norton or McAfee..
I've used them all and none of them come near NOD32 for detection, speed or cost.
You download a free 30 day fully working trial of NOD32 from www.eset.com
Remember that any anti-virus is only as good as it's last update so make sure you set it to auto update.
If you decide to buy Nod32 it is only £54 for 3 years (pay for two years get one free).
Go here for a list of awards which it has won.
http://www.eset.com/company/awards.php
Also in my experience those who recommend AVG or Norton have either never heard of or ever installed NOD32.
Run AVG for 30 days and then install it and run NOD32 and you'll be amazed what you find.
Also remember NEVER install and run MORE than ONE anti-virus program at a time.
Best anti-spyware I find is Xoftspy.
Also anyone who thinks that the best feature of a program is that it is free is a complete idiot. You only get what you pay for.
