yes it is better to use ethernet however usb processes data more quickly and is moe powerful, but ehternet is more conventional and easy to use.

Assuming that the PC has USB 2.0 and your network card is 10/100 Base T, the transfer rates are different but make no odds on a modem connection. The download speeds of the modem, even if on max ADSL, will only be as high as the file transfer rate on the line. Both USB and Ethernet work at transfer rates higher than that on the ADSL line (assuming thats what your modem is for), which means it won't make any difference.
Ethernet is easier to control manually, USB is automatically looked after by the operating system.

The only USB modems I have seen are dial up, external modems, which are rated at 56 Kb/s (but you will be lucky to get into the 40 Kb/s range in reality). So, it does not matter which type of cable you use, because you will only receive and transmit at the speed of your modem.
If you go to cable, the fastest I've seen available for home use is 10 Mb/s data rate. USB 2.0 is rated at about 400 Mb/s and the slowest Ethernet cables, if they are still around, are Cat 5, which are rated at 100 Mb/s. That is why it will make no difference which cable you select.
I hope this helps.

there is no better, a modem is still going to be slower than either one of those connections so the internet speed isnt determined by that connection.
Just use what ever the modem needs you to use.
edit: am quite sure usb 2 is way faster than ethernet guys ;-) but like I said it probably doesnt matter.

You should definitely use the ethernet instead of the USB. Ethernet is definitely faster and more solid/stable than a USB connection. Besides, there's nothing else to use the ethernet for so you might as well use that and keep your USB ports open for other devices. (digital camera, mp3 player, printer, etc)

I hope you are talking about adsl/dsl/cable modem.
Get the ethernet cable, but just the cheap Cat5, but shielded Cat-6 UTP ethernet cable. It seems that 100Mbps Ethernet is on its way out, in coming are the fibre and the slower Gigabit 1000Mbps, and to use gigabit ethernet you would need Cat6 certified cable. (downward compatible to 10Mbps, 100Mbps).
USB 2.0 command a max of 480Mbps, which is a shared bandwidth.
You could only get a small faction of such speed most of the time.

Ethernet.
I have just received an invitation to upgrade my broadband to 8MB/s and the literature states that to make full use of this I would need to upgrade my roter from USB to Ethernet.
