You can only send instant messages to those people who ARE in your contact lists. If they are not, all you can do is e-mail them.

on your yahoo messenger press CTRL+M and go to other contact tab
and type the id and send IM
or
Go to Actions, Click Send an Instant Message.Click the Tab Other contacts.Enter the email id and send the message
