I like the idea of dragons. I think ancient societies came across the skeletons of dinosaurs and decided they were dragons. After all, they found their bones right there, didn't they? And even though early archeologists didn't write down that they found dinosaur bones in the temples, etc., some modern archeologists are finding the bones heaped into the trash the early ones threw out trying to find treasure. It's kind of telling that some of the biggest dinosaur skeletons are in China, who are best known for dragon myths. Also, some of the massive bones and skulls could very well be the explanation for the cyclops, Titans, and other mythical creatures.

A long time ago, dragonkind came to Earth, with a view to partnering with the dominant lifeform native to the planet.

Unfortunately, the dominant lifeform was man, and man does NOT countenance rivals to his dominance. He engendered all-out war on dragons. So they left and went back home to Harrakohr. The String that connects Harrakohr to Earth was sealed at their end to keep them safe.

Dragons are an UNfallen species. Their progenitors PASSED the test, unlike your "Adam" and "Eve". They don't DO the competition thing. They mostly don't NEED to. And if it comes to that, well, there are other races in the Alliance of Sapient Species who are better equipped and far more willing. Maybe, since yours is a fallen but redeemed species, someday, if you accept that redemption, you'll be invited to join the Alliance as a species, instead of only a handful of your members here and there, once in awhile.

The Peoples of the Alliance hope so. We'll keep a light burning in the window for you; just in case.

An ingrained & inate fear of reptiles along with the finding of dinosaur bones inevitably lead to the dragon theory around the world!

A lot of dragon art of history displays them as all of the things that man fears most. It is also a way of keepiong your young from going where it is not safe... M. Night Shamalans Village anyone!

Same reason some people belive in god, they like a good yarn. Old stories don't make it any more truthful though, if they did the hairy god of mammoths would still be scaring our children at night.
