The Toyota Aygo 1.4 Diesel. It's so light you don't notice the lower power engine and does 83 mpg (better than any hybrid) - however, you might have to import it if American, not sure it's available there.

The Suzuki Swift can get over 40 mpg on a normal, gasoline engine, depending on your driving habits. I believe Chevy markets the exact same machine as the small Metro.

I get EXCELLENT mileage on my Honda Civic Si and its almost 10yrs old with 120,000kms on it. Recent addition of a cold air intake has improved the excellent mileage even more.

I think the family car made by Maruti,Hundai,Tata Motors,.........................
the sports cars are not best on milage but they are good at speeds so the family ar will give the best average in that one which does not have an A/C.....
also disel cars give good average than Petrol once but the life of engine of disel cars is less than that of petrol once.
