On the lates version of Yahoo IM there is a place type in a mobile number, phone number, email address or a Yahoo ID. Once you type in an ID you can select the option to send an IM.

Go to Actions, Click Send an Instant Message.Click the Tab Other contacts.Enter the email id and send the message

The best way is to contact them and ask for permission first. Then once you have added them to your messenger list, you will be able to do everything else.

on your yahoo messenger press CTRL+M and go to other contact tab
and type the id and send IM
