I hear its better to leave the computer running "On" and just have the monitor "off" when not in use. If you keep rebooting On and Off daily that can damage your computer. This was information given to me many years ago. Is this still true or ever true?

This was a piece of advice given out in the mid 80's when the IBM PC was making it's way into homes. Initially people left their computers on because back then it took quite a while for them to boot ( sometimes up to 5 minutes ). Then there was some business about the power supplies 'wearing out' from being turned on and off and older hard drives wearing out from having to spin up and down so often. We have come a long way from those days.

In these more enlightened days ( Grin ) turning your computer on and off is more a matter of energy conservation than anything else. Modern hardware does not suffer from the issues older equipment did. Turning your computer off when not in use is just as common sense as turning off any other appliance ( TV , stereo, etc.. when not in use.

Aside from that most systems have a 'hybernate' mode nearly all systems and services are suspended, but the system remains 'on' and can be brought back to use in a matter of seconds. This greatly reduces the amount of power used, but it is not ' off '. This feature is most frequently used in laptops to conserve battery power.

First off some of the people that are answering question on here need to give-up and admit that they do not know anything about computers. Turning of the computer by pressing the power button on the case can harm it. That is what leaded to Hard Drive Faller and seek errors. It should only be done if everything else does not work. So please let Windows shut down the computer.

With most modern computers turning it off and on is far less severe process than it used to be and leaving your PC endlessly will ultimately mean it will eventually wear out quicker. It's OK to leave it on for daily use and you could just put it in sleep mode if you plan to be away for more than a couple of hours but with power consumption becoming more expensive and power requirements for newer PCs increasing the best thing is to turn it off overnight especially if you wont return to until after a workday. I hope this helps in making your decision. Good luck!

It may have been true at one point but now.....untrue, it's one of the biggest computing myths. It's actually better to turn off the computer at night. It gives your computer a fresh strart in the morning (needed with Windows especially) and it saves you money on your electric bill. Turning off the monitor will save a little as well.

It used to be fairly true. The monitors were subject to "burn in" and the power supplies ran pretty hot, so powering down -and shutting off the fans - meant some heat stress on delicate components.
It is no longer true. Modern PCs and Apples don't run as hot, and modern monitors don't experience "burn in" (except for some low-end plasma screens, I am told).
So don't sweat it, if you want to turn your machine off. The only drag is how looooonnnnnnggggg it takes Windows (or OS10) to boot. Scheiss!

Anyway, hope that helped.

In the days of the old 486 and before, that held true. Today it doesn't really matter that much anymore, if at all. I would still recommend not switching on and off every 10 min though. That is simply to protect the pwer supply as that is still a bit sensitive to that.

Yes, in long time turning computer on/off may harm some of it's devices like HDD, Power supply. Many experts offer that keep ur copmuter on rather off it and turn it on again.

Turning OFF and ON your computer does not affect it. Unless you are doing every 5 minutes or so.

Remember to shut your system down from the operating system's settings.

no, i have a laptop and it's impossible to "turn the monitor off" as it's directly connected to the computer! as long as you go start, turn off computer and not just press the power button until it's off you probably will not have any problems with your computer!!

I have read that if you turn your computer off let it rest for at least a minute. I have also heard 3 minutes. I turn my off at night including turning off the surge protector.
