Sunday is traditionally the first day of the Judaeo-Christian seven-day week, between Saturday and Monday, and the second day of the weekend in some cultures. It is considered a holiday in lands of Christian tradition, and is the day when most Christians attend Church.
In India, Sunday is Ravivar. It is based on Ravi - Vedic God of Sun.
In the Gregorian calendar, no century can start on a Sunday. In the Hebrew calendar, no year can start on a Sunday. Any month beginning on a Sunday will contain a Friday the 13th.

In religion, Sunday was the reverend day that the apostles came together to meet. It was Sunday that the Tomb was found empty (remember Sunday started sunset Saturday). The Sabbath was the seventh day hence Saturday by our calender shoudl be holy. However....remember the sabath and to keep it holy is a Law holiday, not a Grace holiday. The New Testament is we live by Grace and sacrifices no longer are needed.

1. By definition, holiday is derived from "holy day"
2. In the Judeo-Christian tradition, the seventh day was the Day God rested from Created and this was a "sabbath" or day of rest.
3. As the present calendars were created (or being created), Sunday was a holy day because that was when Christians chose to worship in celebration of the resurrection of Jesus.

Like the man said, if you're refering to the Western tradiation of 'resting on the sabbath' rather than to this specific Sunday, then the answer is to be found in the Bible. Well, half the answer is.
We all know that God laboured to create the world for six days, and rested on the seventh, making that a sanctified day for his people - like their lord, they would rest on the seventh day and enjoy the Creation which He had made for them.
Only, a careful reading of the Bible reveals the sabbath to begin at sunset on Friday and end at sunset on Saturday. As I'm sure you know, Jews still observe the Saturday sabbath.
Christians, however, went on to observe a Sunday sabbath for two reasons:
Sunday was the first day of the week, and a day which was meant to be used in worship to God. Jesus rebuked the Jews for resting on the Sabbath, saying that they should do good on that day, and worship God on the Sunday (the first day of the week). As Chrisitan practices grew, the idea of worshiping God on the Sunday merged with the idea of a day of rest (tradiationally the Saturday), partly backed up by Jesus' rebuke;
Council of Laodicea, in 365 A.D., banned any observe of the Saturday sabbath by Christians and made resting on Saturday a crime. Historians generally view this as a conscious attempt by the Council to distance early Chrisians from the Jews, who had become embroiled with various wars with the Roman Empire, and so were far from popular.

I'm not sure but I think that originally Saturday was a holliday for the Christians. Later it changed to Sunday, although nowadays it is nothing but a day we got all used to seeing as the day when we don't work. But there are people who work on Sundays too.

2000 BC - 1800 AD
Many people spent one day a week on religion. This was called a "holy day". That's where the word holiday comes from. On this day people rested and prayed.

because of people's religious beliefs. The Bible says that each man should use the seventh day of the week only for worshiping God,as in the Creation it is stated that in the seventh day God himself rested ,after having created the world. However,as your very question shows,people are no longer aware of the religious significance of this day,which in my opinion is only a useless tradition anyway,like all the other religious traditions established thousands of years ago because people could no longer be controlled by rational,concrete means.
