It is a policy of having sub components delivered no sooner and no l;ater than is necessary for assembly. It reduces the need for warehousing. It also distorts many conventional accounting ratios by minimising inventory. In our modern world accounting ratios are much more important than reality.

It's a system where by the raw materials, stocks or goods are produced/manufactured or ordered whenever the inventory reach a certain low. This is to minimise cost by avoiding unnecessary storage space/cost.
