The main reason, or for me anyways, is so that while you're in the bathroom away from everyone else you don't want to miss out on anything and be the only one not in on whatever happened while you were away, or if for some reason you couldn't find your group you would have a friend with you. It's also to have somebody to talk to about whatever you wanna talk about. And if there's no toilet paper in your stall...

Because most girls are usually completely unable to do anything by themselves. Even going to the toilet has to be a social event for them. Apart from feeling safer because they are not alone,they also get a chance to talk and gossip without any men listening. In old rotten toilets the reason for this might also be that the door wouldn't close so you need someone to push it to for you or to hold your bag and coat because there are no coat hangers inside the toilet.

Girls often take friends with them in the toilet because they need someone to ask if they look good or bad especially when they're putting on accesories and make-ups...

The toilet is a mean, dirty place and the devil stays there..so us girls (for safety and comfort reasons and mostly because we're so scared) we take our friends with us..plus its nice company while you're sitting on the pan to talk about private things..plus no one can hear us in there so its cool..

Quitessenses has it right! The proceedure is complicated, I'm of the dangling persuasion- but I've seen the girls do it. One has to hold the other down while another holds the target... Then there is the sniff tester, which .. nevermind...
