They use a technique called echolocation. Which is very similar to the radar. They make a sound as the sound deflects of various objects, they make out its shape and size.

They do have vision, they have eyes, they can detect food (insects) at further distance by emitting a high pitched shreek, that bounces back like Radar. I used to shoot rubber bands, and toss up pebbles at the street lamp where they would fly around eating bugs when I worked the overnight shift. The little bats would swoop down on them thinking they were bugs, only to veer off at the last second, after detecting that they were not bugs. Amazing creatures, that eat many insect a night, and are good for the environment, the bat is not interested in being anywhere near a human being, so those "Bat attack" stories are all untrue folk lore, that was given to the Bat because the little fellows are Nocturnal (active at night), and misunderstood.

Bats the most secretive animals on the earth.who stays in old caves and creep places. Ha! so bats can see but very little
because of the dark place were they live. For example lions can not see for first 3 weeks because of the complete blindness in their mother womb so they are not addicted to light. And ya bats screams means they release sonic waves which get reflected to the object and then a bat can change his path.

Echolocation, also called Biosonar, is the biological sonar used by several mammals such as bats, dolphins and whales. The term was coined by Donald Griffin, who was the first to conclusively demonstrate its existence in bats. Two bird groups also employ this system for navigating through caves, the so called Cave Swiftlets in the genus Aerodramus (formerly Collocalia) and the unrelated Oilbird Steatornis caripensis.

There is a lot of misinformation in the answers here, but several people are correct. BATS CAN SEE. They have fine eyesight. They use echo location at night to "see" their prey because it works better. There just isn't enough light during the night to see a mosquito or moth or whatever they are hunting. Their natural sonar overcomes this problem.

I don't know why people think bats are blind, other than that they are nocturnal and hunt at night.

Bats use echo-location. Basically a biological radar system...

They use sound waves bounced off of objects to locate things in 3D space. They even hunt bugs with it.

It's pretty cool. :) Crazy, huh?

If you really want to know the physics of 3d positional sound, well, the basics are that we have two ears, and we judge directionality by the delay between a specific sound wave hitting one ear, and hitting the other ear. So we can deduce which direction it came from and approximately how far.

Bats use the same system for pretty much all navigation. They just send out sounds and listen for the sounds bouncing back. Round trip time, and directionality can tell them where something is, and over time it'll tell them what direction it's moving too.

Neat, eh?

bats are blind they cant see inspite of that they came to know about the object in front of them because they produces ultrasonic sound waves which travel if the way is clear bat continue flying but if any object found these waves struck with the object and return back bats hear these reflections and came to know about the objects in the way.

Bats use a method called " ECHOLOCATION". Produce ultrasonic sound waves, which when strike any object, get reflected and are picked up by the bat's large radar like ears. Thus the bat can locate the presence of any object and steer its course of flight. Since the sound waves are ultrasonic, they are inaudible to human ears.

Bats can prouduce different kind of sound which cant be felt by human. because the frequency of that sound is not felt by human. Bats always produces these kind of sounds. When they hear the echo of the sound which they makes they understands that some object or wall is there. Thats why bats are always fly or goes very near to any object or wall.

bats got very good sense of hearing. they produces sound waves which travel and strike the obstecles then return bats hear these reflections and know about the objects in the way. The same principle is used in modern day radars also.
