They use a kind of radar. (sonar is used for under water detection, but it is easy to confuse them) That is why bats sometimes get caught in peoples hair, they can`t bounce there radar off of the hair so to them it is as if nothing is there. I once witnessed a bat fly right into a woman's hair one evening, isn`t it strange how they can pluck tiny insects out of mid air but something like big hair can throw them off.
Here is some info on bats: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bat

Who says bats have no vision? Blind as bats is not true, they have extremely good eyes. It's what those funny round things are above their noses.

They have something like a radar system .. they have organs that send signals in air and recieve back what reflects from it ... depending on that , they know how far the objects are

they use radar. they emit a high pitched squeak. the squeak bounces off of stuff and the bat uses the returning sound waves to navigate.
that's the best i can tell you.

they use sonar. it bounces off of things around them and when it gets back they can tell how far away they are from say a tree or something. they also have very good hearing, so they know when something is moving.
