are we to assume you mean outside for a garden
if so this is my experience
flowering plants i plant perennials they flower once or more per season they grow back every year and are a real treat to watch when the bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds visit them

annuals ad instant color to a garden ... they have to be planted every year
they repeat bloom all season long and take very little care

first find which plants suit your needs.. then depending on your zone you can pick out some plants that go well with the surrounding landscape.. for example if you have a lot of trees around and your yard is shady pick plants that thrive in shade... if you have a sunny spot...6 hours or more per day...full sun plants should do well
plants cant live in all locations so if a plant or flower is not doing well check the location you planted it in... too much sun too much shade too much water too much what ever..... gardening has been a real release and very therapeutic for me
and I'm a plumber by trade

here are a couple sights that might help

Depends on how high or low maintenance you want your green space to be, low maintenance go for shrubs, some produce some very nice flowers. High maintenance, go for flowering bedding plants. This is what I think you meant to ask, because flowers are plants.

No I do not have a green thumb. That does not mean that your thumb is actually green it means that you like to garden and work with flowers and that kind of thing.

BOTH-

Plants for structure and texture (foliage) and flowers for brief highlights...flowers spend more time OUT of bloom than in- you need a good collection of shrubs with pretty leaves to form the bulk of your garden...
