It's all for the appearance. The real person comes out at home.

If anyone else lived in the home with you they too would eventually see the real person.

It's common for people to put up a front.

Most likely because there is some negative emotional tie to those they know compared to no emotional tie to those they don't know. If that generally applies to everyone they are "close" to..then it's a good chance it's something they brought upon themselves. In the case of a wealthy person, it could be persons they were close to were always trying to get a piece of what they had before it was offered.

I guess you would really have say, closely related to, since being "close to" someone typically means a positive bond.

Because they do not want outsiders to know they have issues of their own. Issues that only the people they are close to know about so they act like their true selves around them. Even though it is truely the persons problem with their self but taking it out on those that are close to them somehow they get satisfaction out of it.

Ever hear of an oxymoron?

Do look up the meaning.

Anybody who's mean to those at home, can't be nice to others outside! He or she can only act like that [more out of fear of having his head kicked in, than anything else!].

Didn't you ever hear about the saying "Charity begins at Home"?

Many a Gangster made public "donations" and "good deeds" to hide their real vicousness behind.

But, at the end of the day, the Truth will out!

There could be many reasons, perhaps you should look at this persons past family history i.e. how was there family life growing up? People usually take on the characteristics of the way they were treated by one of there parents. Was this person subject to an alcoholic parent? Look at their past history. They propably picked up this trait from one of their parents. Were they an only child? Was the family divided? 'First seek to understand before trying to be understood' Good luck!

Because the people they are close to let them behave that way?

Because they have power over the people they are close to--they are the breadwinner, lease holder?

Because they can't get away with treating strangers the same way?

Because they've deluded themselves into thinking that people they don't know as well are somehow less flawed than people they know well?

it's easier to be cruel to people you are close to, the person might not like "strangers" or people who are not close to him, so the best thing to do is be polite to get them away from him, the person has already been accepted by his friends and has nothing left to prove to them, so he may just be a jerk, or it could be his way of showing affection

it's natural, when u are around someone not close to you, you don't want them to get negative image of you, so you have to act kindly.. when you are around someone that close to you, you feel that you can show your true self without hiding it. That's it..

Sometimes it is easier to be yourself around family and it can mean that if you are a jerk, you will be a jerk to them, but try and put on a nice front for others.
