Every night I stay up really late (somewhere from 1 to 3 A.M.) because I'm too freaked out to sleep, because I think my house is going to get broken in to. My neighborhood is pretty safe, but many homes in this area have been broken into, and our car was broken into right outside our house, but other than that it has never happened to me. It has been causing me to get less sleep and I just freak out over every small noise I hear at night!

Basically, I just need help on how to get to sleep and stop freaking out about this!!

Get a dog, or a burglar alarm- these might help to give you some piece of mind. Maybe you should consider some kind of counselling if you feel things are getting too out of hand. I remember that when we lived in a bad area and had our home under treat of vandalism and burglary knowing we had our dog there was a great help for all of us. Try not to worry too much about things, remember that you're in a safe neighborhood and stay positive, I'm sure things will work out for you!

Put lights on at night outside of your house, all night. Have safety locks on your doors. Make sure all your windows are locked. You can also put a chair by your door on the inside of your house, or stack cans in front of the doors, inside of your house. If someone tries to break in, it will make alot of noise. It also helps to have a dog. Get an alarm system. That should make you rest alot better.

Number one thing is your safety, your things can be replaced. Make sure you have a good alarm on your house. motion sensors in strategic areas and motion lights at your front and back doors. the more motion lights the better. fake cameras mounted in strategic spots so that they are seen. these can be bought for little to nothing at your hardware store or radio shack. when we are asleep we are most vulnerable, make sure your bedroom door is reenforced and lock it at night when your sleeping. if you have a computer set up webcams within your house and place the computer in your bedroom, if you feel an intruder is inside your home, get out of bed, go to your computer and look at your webcam feeds to get a closier look at what's going on outside of your bedroom door. most cases the intruder will not notice these small cameras. most of these webcameras have night vision on them so you can clearly see what's on them. a great place to start would be www.x10.com their cameras are great and inexpensive. make sure if you have a cell phone that it's close by, if the intruder cuts your lines or takes the kitchen or living room phones off the hook, you'll be able to use your cell phone and call 911. i don't know if you have a small children or not or if it's just you, but many people also get a dog, dogs sense of hearing is 10 times what ours is. back to the cameras, something i failed to mention, x10.com cameras have the ability to snap shots as well as notify police. again not knowing if you have kids or not, I'll assume not, invest in a firearm, their cheap and just may save your life in a last line of defense, if the intruder makes it pass your bedroom door. fire low starting at the groing area as your depress the tigger by the time you've emptied your clip your barrell will be at forehead level, delivering necessary lethal shots. shoot to kill not to wound, even if the intruder is down wounded, walk up to him, put one hand over your face to protect it and fire the remaining rounds into his cranium until he is dead, remember that. sounds harsh and cruel but your still alive and that's what matters. these basics should help you sleep better at night.

Have a friend or someone stay with you for a little while. I know it helped for me after my house was burgled. It might make you feel a bit safer at night, also leave a couple of lights on.

Get a security system installed that will sound an alarm and notify the police of any attempt to break in anywhere.

i get paranoid about this sort of thing too....whenever im in the shower (especially at night) i always think someone is going to break in and do unnamable things to my son and i. it has only started since my husband went on deployment last month. we have a dog, but he is old, and i think his hearing is getting bad...so i dont have full faith in him to bark...im not sure it would even hear it anyway.
