Depends on whether you are a creationist or an evolutionist, or a pastafarian...

Creationists would probably lean toward the hen coming first.

Evolutionists know the egg was around long before the modern fowl known as chicken evolved from a lower order bird ancestor.

Pastafarians posit that the Flying Spaghetti Monster willed everything into existence via his noodly appendages, and commonly cavorts about changing the results of all carbon dating results, and investigations into our origins, so we can never know that He created us. Plus we need more pirates to combat global warming...

I'm sorry, what was the question again?

Creationist will say that the Hen came first, because in the begining all life was created and thus a Hen and Rooster would have been created as full grown adult birds, not eggs.

Evolutionist will say that the egg came first because all life on Earth is a result of random mutations. So a bird closesly related to the Chicken would have laid an egg and the developing embryo would have had some mutation which caused it to become the modern chicken.

Basically.

egg came first

evoloution is a gradual process. an animal's genome cannot change during its life time, therefore the critical mutation in genome that leads to the existance of a brand new species can only take place before the actual animal is born. i. e. the first chicken must come from the egg laid by a 'pre-chicken', howver it's a ture chick egg.
