It is a complex induction ceremony, passed down through the ages by the Brotherhhod of Fish. They chase him to test his physical endurance and they will induct him once he has proved himself in the chasing, then, they will present him with the Golden fish-flake as a mak of his acceptance. This watery honour comes with an annual subscription to the Fish Times and the Alliterative Allied Anti-Angling Alliance.

At a guess I would say that the one being chased is the female and the ones doing the chasing are males. The female fish gives of a lovely smell to the boys and they will chase them even to the stage where the female is exhausted. Usually thought it will just result in baby fish.

The common cause for a fish to chase another fish is territory.
Most freshwater fishes are territorial, they tend to dominate a certain space on an aqaurium or on a pond environment for nesting purposes or just dominance. Some are just plain agrresion. Examples for these sort of fishes are the family of cichlids

I would imagine that the one being chased is a female. I have a tropical fish tank and my fish used to "bully" one particular fish. I was told by the aquarium that you should have at least 3 or 4 females to every male to prevent "bullying" of females. The males want to mate & sometimes it gets a bit too much for the poor female if all the males are after her.
hope this helps!!!

We have Tropical Fish, generally if there is one fish that is the weakest, then they will be chased, and if one is ill and dying they chase them and kill and eat them, its the circle of life I'm afraid.
