Pure coal is carbon. However, beds of coal may contain layers of minerals which could conceivably be magnetic. The coal itself would NOT be magnetic -- only the mineral layer.
Also, not all meteorites are magnetic either. In fact many are "stony meteorites" and would be difficult to identify as being a meteorite except by actually witnessing the event or finding it in a really different type of terrain.

Coal, as others have pointed out, is carbon and thus not magnetic by itself. You could, with good enough quality coal, make a carbon rod out of it, and put an electrical current through it like a wire. It would then generate a magnetic field, just as a wire does. That would go away as soon as you turned the power off.
The mineral magnetite is reduced iron oxide (FeO) and is magnetic by itself - this is commonly called Lodestone. It is also black, so it might give the erroneous impression of being "magnetic coal". It is much heavier though, weighing around 4 times as much as lump of coal the same size.

Paul FB's answer is dead on. Let me add that if you believe you have a meteorite, there are tests for that as well. The Fe-Ni group of meteorites tend to shatter on either hexagonal or octahedral planes and are NOT noted for their magnetism. If you have a magnetic lump of "stuff", then you probably have a hunk of magnetite (Fe3 O4). If it's hexahedral or octahedral and not magnetic, then perhaps you do have a meteorite. Take it to an expert who can verify this for you with a hands-on evaluation. It won't take long, I promise.
