I'm traveling through Chicago at the beginning of Sept via Amtrak & have heard really good things about some of the food in Chicago ~ especially the hot dogs. My layover in Chicago is about 4-5 hours & I don't want to go too far from Union Station. Thanks for all your help!

There are all sorts of places under Union Station you can grab some great junk food...gyros, Chicago style hot dogs, Italian beefs, burgers, onion rings etc.

If you have 4+ hours though...you GOTTA get out and walk around! Union station is in a good section of town...just head 10 blocks east and you'll be at the lake where you can walk around and grab vendor food near the museums, etc. Stash your stuff in a locker at Union Station and get out and walk!! If nothing else, at least walk a block or so to the Sears Tower and see that!! Grab a map of the city, you can't go wrong!

by all means have a hot dog. However you are a short walk from Greek town. If you have never had Greek food before, you should try it,
Walk west on Adams - the street on the north side of the station- cross over the Kennedy Expressway .
Go to Halsted St. distance is under 1/2 mile
When I'm back in Chicago I always go to the Greek Islands Restaurant
The service can be a bit hurried ,but the food is really good and the prices are reasonable
They are long waits on weekend evenings 45+ min
Order the grilled octopus appetizer - great stuff . Octopus the way it is supposed to be: Charred and crunchy on the outside , soft and succulent in the middle.
the lamb dishes are good as is the chicken

with 4-5 hours of down time my suggestion is to walk (or take the cta bus for $2) east to state street (2 blks more east to michigan street). it's only about 5 min w/ traffic from union station so u won't be that far. There you will find choices for shopping as well as food!
chicago is also known for garretts popcorn...there is one in union station where the retail section is on the second floor....downstairs there is a food court as well
