i once asked this very question to an acquaintance from Israel and according to her answer:
it's because the old testament calls them the chosen people (which they feel gives them rights the rest of us mortals don't have), and because they were enslaved by the Pharaoh, and Hitler tried to exterminate them.... and every other misfortune that has ever befallen them.
(if you're wondering what all those things have to do with anything, that's my question too)

Well, it's because they don't do as you suggest. Unfortunately, most see them through the eyes of a liberalized media, just as we see the happening's in Iraq through this same media. Having spent a year in Iraq as a US military soldier, I can tell you first hand that the image portrayed by the media does our people a great disservice. They distort what is presented and only the negative is provided so how can one know the facts, you can't. Same is true of Israel. You see the poor Islamic people suppressed by the Jews when in fact, it's the other way around. Israel struggles to exist and has made every possible attempt to keep the peace but how can you negotiate peace with a people that is dedicated to your extinction.

HMMMMM Are you talking about the same Isreal that was booted out of the West Bank? The same Isreal that was run out of the Gaza strip? The same Isreal that had 4 soldiers kidnapped last week and was then bombarded? The same Isreal that came under attack during the Gulf war when UN coalition forces were involved in battle with Iraq. I don't know, what could they be thinking?

Because they are the USA's buddy. This may sound anti-Semitic (and I am not) but Woody Allen once said in a film that he was paranoid after coming out of a restaurant because he overheard someone say "Jews start all wars". I had to laugh at that. I really don't advocate messing with the Jews but they shouldn't start sh*t either.

Israel has the support of U.S. Thats why they act like this. They are killing innocent civillians and destroying a beautiful land just for the release of two of their soldiers. Its totally untolerable. They have to pay for it.

Israel was provoked. They have a reason to defend themselves, and attack if they have suffered soldiers kidnapped. I know they will prevail.
