Becoz they are simply fools who trust in their governments, trust media blindly and having arrogance to its height. However, there are few others who keep their eyes open like Thomas friedman who are trying their best to let Americans know the truth.
A normal American thinks that they are saving the world by killing terrorists all around the world but infact they are making breeding grounds for them. Afghanistan, Iraq, Sudan, Somalia are to name a few. They want to have similar American colonies all over the world and want to impose democracy (of their choice) on other countries but they will not accept it when Hamas gets elected.
They kill 1000s of young and old in Iraq and say that its worth killing as America is saved? For God's sake please. Bush says that Israel is provoked by Hizbollah and now Israel has all the right to kill unarmed civilians, destroy the infrastructure of a democratic country and what would that bring to America if not hatred? Today's hatred is tomorrows terrorist and cycle continues...
Americans are not ignorants, they are arrogants!!! Open your eyes America as the world is changing. None of the super powers in the world remained and so you will be over too and then you will have to pay the price of incursions, killings, invading and helping the rouge nations who invade other lands!
India, China, Russia are getting up to balance the power and someday in near future world is not gonna be the same surely.

Like most generalizations, I find it unwise to just disparage the entire 3rd largest population in the world (if you don't count the EU as a country) simply because of your view of either their media or their government.
However, there is a reason for your perception, and its origin lies in the distribution of people and information across the huge expanse of land that is the US. Just like your narrow perspective of a broader population, some Americans have reduced visiblity of the world as a whole though their government's interests span the globe. The U.S. media has become loosely controlled over the last few decades and allowed to fall into the hands of fewer and fewer commercial interest--this in the name of deregulation. There is no longer a real Federally mandated "Fairness Doctrine" controlling the balance of political coverage leading to a more divided and less informed populous. The commercial interests in charge, having no federal obligation to do otherwise, will report only what they think viewers and listeners want to see and hear. The key here is "want" to hear, not need to. Bad news doesn't play well, it makes a bad consumer, and since, the majority of media interests are commercially funded, they can choose to present less bad news or bad news with a twist. The viewers, unless educated to actually understand how the media system works, has no reason to think that the media system they grew up with is doing them any harm. They come to trust the talking heads of commercial media, out of repeated viewing and clever PR. Trust is an evolution from the days when our only interfaces were personal. Having no reason for some to doubt what they see, having no daily or occasional need for international connections (one can go his or her whole life in the US without seeing another country or talking to someone from another country) they have no reason to think that their view is wrong or questionable.

I'm not so sure about wanting to appear civilized. Not so sure they're ignorant either. Arrogance, perhaps in that they just don't realize their spread of political, economic, and cultural norms are resented by many.

You are full of crap.
America is the only country that cares what happens to other countries. We are always the ones first on the scene when someone needs help. When people need protection who do they call first the USA! When they need a loan who do they call the USA.
You need to get a clue.

We're fighting wars to keep terrorists from destroying everybody else and then come for us. Freedom is not FREE! ... and we're giving food to other countries that don't eat because we CARE! ... does that make us ignorant?

I don't know much about america... sometimes they have hidden agendas... they will not help a country just like that.. they need something in return... like just because they wanted to be a hero or they wanted to be recognized...etc.....That is just my opinion..I don't want to judge america.. But all I know is that there's no perfect country and absolutely no perfect people and leaders...
