I smoke cigarettes (sadly), and I've noticed that on some nights, smoke seems to hang in the air forever and at other times disappears almost immediately (I smoke outdoors, always).

Smoke hangs in the air the longest when there is an inversion, or a switch in the temperature levels and the air with the smoke can not rise.
