I think 2 or 3 is more than enough, but then again, hotel california had like 5 or 6 and it was f**king great.

generally i find 3 is the perfect number, a bass, a lead and a rhythm guitar, bands like nirvana only used a bass and a lead/rhythm, but frequently brought in a third player.

having more than 4 is fine if they are played the right way, there comes a point where too many guitars playing at once just gets annoying, personally i like to be able to hear each individual instrument playing without too much conflict with other instruments.

I reckon it depends on the sound of the music they're after but i reckon 4's enough ... 3 gives a great sound and i know exactly what your talking about with Hotel California ... it totally rocks!

being in a band myself. 2 is perfect. Right now we don't have enouph but we just record of another track for double guitar. 1 is good but sometimes you just want that back up sound. 3 is pushing it. to much noise.

I believe 3 is enough, because you don't want to drown out the other instruments, Just experiment, you'll find your own chemistry.

Good Luck to you,
