Unfortunately, this could be lots of things.

you don't mention if you can see any BIOS messages or anything when the machine starts. If you can, it's not a hardware problem.

However if not, the first thing if possible it confirm the monitor is ok. To do this, you'd need to put it on to a working system and check its ok.

Good luck!

However, because it lights up and then goes to red, it's probably ok.

So other possibilities are:

The lead from the card to the monitor is duff or not plugged in firmly.

The video card is physically dead. Check this by either putting in another video card or trying the video card in another machine. If it is dead you need to replace it, although this can be confused with the following software problems.

The video card is OK hardware wise but isn't working properly. If you're running windows, fo in to safe mode by pressing f8 when it's booting up. If it works ok now, then the problem is with drivers, so reinstall your video drivers.

The BIOS has been corrupted by a system crash and the BIOS is pointing to the wrong type of video card to boot up from. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del on start up to check BIOS video settings. Check the interface (AGP, etc) for first boot-up of video is correct.

Re seat all cards especially video card and check connectors inside machine.

If possible and you've tried everything else, reinstall windows. This is a real pain but you might have to if all else fails. Expect to lose everything. Do a repair first or if not possible do full reinstall.

Finally, if none of the above work and putting in a known working video card attached to a known working monitor and it still doesn't work, it could be a dead or dying hard drive or a duff motherboard. If you think the hard drive is dodgy, you can bypass the hd OS by using a standalone CD OS. Try downloading the CD version of Linspire (free) and putting your boot up option in BIOS to CD first. If this works you can use this to search out any problems and it doesn't hit your system in any way and is easy to use, looking a lot like windows,

I got a 14 inch monitor that trnes red when it does not have any video signal going to it. and I think that all you need is a new video card .
