You have to keep playing. There's a critical stage when your fingertips are really sore, and you can see lines from pressing the strings. You can tell you're in this stage when it hurts to take a shower. However, you have to push through that stage. You might feel tempted to stop and have your fingers heal, but then that means you would have to start over. It might take about a month of practicing every day to get tough fingertips.

Keep playing and use an ACOUSTIC guitar. Play until it hurts really bad, then play some more. Play everyday for as long as you can stand it. Just becareful of blisters.
