Mom, I lost my cellphone.

Simply tell her, these things happen, then call the company the cell is through so that they can monitor if any calls are made.
One of two things can happen where the cell is concerned, you could call it and see if anyone answers...because sometimes you get lucky and someone has found it and is waiting to hear from the owner. Or you might get someone who finds it choosing to look through your phone book...they could call a friend and inform them that they have your phone. The friend then could get in touch with you or the friend might give the finder your home number.
I suggest you call the cell company, report the phone lost so that they can possibly suspend usage of the Sim card in the phone. Check to see if your contract included "Lost or stolen" coverage, some do.
Simply let your mom know...if she starts to freak tell her you have already taken the necessary steps to make sure whoever finds it isn't able to use it.
Do the steps above and your mom will be impressed, honestly. My daughter found a cell once and she did the phonebook thing...it got the phone back to the rightful owner who happened to be a business person using her husbands phone for the night.

tell her you are pregnant and the guy is married and wants you to leave home and go live with him in his trailer, then tell her life could be that bad but luckily you only lost your cellphone!
