Because of your age and experience, you have a lot of options and a better network of colleagues than younger workers.
* You can look for a job at the executive level - using sites like http://www.careerjournal.com (free), http://www.ritesite.com (modest fee), and http://www.theladders.com (fee) - that have senior level positions.
* You must know many people in the banking industry. Contact them and ask them if they know of any new banks getting started or existing banks with good job openings. Ask them where they would look for a job if they were you.
These are NOT "informational interviews." They are just colleague to colleague discussions. At some point in the future, you may be able to help them with similar advice. With the banking industry apparently in a consolidation phase, there are many bankers at all levels "on the street" just because they were employed by the acquiree rather than the acquirer.
* Belong to a banker's organization? Go to the meetings; visit the website. Some organizations have jobs posted for their members (or by members for the public). You'll find a list of national organizations, that may have local branches meeting in your area, at - http://www.job-hunt.org/associations/financialassociations.shtml
* There are also job sites for people over 50 (you'll qualify soon), like http://www.seniorjobbank.com where employers are actually LOOKING for people with experience and a good work ethic.
Don't be discouraged. A job search is never easy, but you'll make it.
Good luck!

I work in Human Resources and while it is against the law to discriminate individuals based on age (and many other factors), this issue tends to be depenent on which industry you work in. The fact that you are in banking, which is highly customer-service and sales focused, experience should count for something, but maybe employers are not interested in you for other reasons besides your age? Without much detail, it's hard to give you advice, but take a hard look at yourself. Not that I'm saying anything bad about you (and surely the law protects you on discriminatory hiring practices) but if you want to get the job, try taking a different angle..... Though you are experienced, do you have a good reputation from past employers? Are you jumping around from bank to bank? Unstable work history even though experienced? What is your client base like (i.e. are you taking clients with you each time you move?) . Also, when you interview, are you focusing too much on salary or "retirement" type questions?
I know that it's difficult to look and do things differently, but surely there has to be a reason why you are not getting hired. 49 is still relatively young, especially that you've got at least another 10-15 years of work life still in you, so I feel that age might not be the reason.

This is the fact in the corporate world, my friend, the older you become, the higher your risk of being retrenched! Forget about the seniority, it is fake at almost all the time except you are in the top management level!
So, my friend, i hope i'm not too late to come to your life, i hope you can still have enough time to build your business before your retirement!
Start working on your business after your working hour and during weekend. Go for the internet business, which requires less of your time and the one that will not make you feel headache with web designing, or which require IT knowledge. Second, choose the internet based company which offer you the opportunity and at the same time giving you the convenience to start the business. Third, choose the business, which does not require big money to start it.
All the above is only available from: http://www.website.ws/powercontrol
Honestly, I tried so many opportunities offered through the internet and this is the only one that really works.

Companies do not want experienced help, they want young clay that they can mold and pay less. I am 54 & if I did not work for myself I don't know who would hire me. Experience seems to have no value, hell I bet they are afraid that you may be able to take advantage of retirement some day.

Have you any time tried the following sites? Please check them turn by turn. I am fully confident that you may not be disappointed as they may suit your requirement seeming to be quite legitimate. The sites contain complete details, including background of the companies, which is normally missing in fly-by-night companies:
http://LD.net/?a2zclassics
http://tinyurl.com/okzxb
http://www.treasuretrooper.com/110557
http://www.aatcm.com/a2zclassics
http://earnsoon.hometypers.hop.clickbank.net
http://earnsoon.richyrich.hop.clickbank.net
http://www.surfjunky.com/?r=earnsoon
I have also come to know that some organization, named probably "Home Business Centre" has a big list of prominent survey sites and sells at some price, which I am not aware of. In those cases selection of work or organization depends at your own choice. Better, for further details, you may contact direct, the email of which is: earn@soon.com

its because your brain begins to slow down after 35 or so. by 45 you should be in business for yourself, of some sort. Experience counts for a lot in business, but is of little advantage as an employee. you can be replaced by a fresh mind, if you are in a slot.

One excuse companies give for not hiring older workers is that they will retire sooner, and the company won't get the full value of their time.

Do you see experience on your balance sheet? If anyone needs to be lay off
it is an accountant. Do you know how many other peoples lives you have destroyed?

Frankly speaking, professionals of your age shouldn't be hired by other people because you might be too talented, too efficient in your job and too difficult to fire.
Furthermore you should be hiring other people to work for you now.
Well, if you find it difficult to get hired, get in touch with me, I might have something that might interest you
