Absolutely! Lee, as a white man of his time, had views which would be considered in today's society as "racist." This was in common with most whites, North or South, at the time. He hated slavery, but again, as a man of his time, didn't quite know what to do about it. He probably hoped for a gradual decline in the institution with an ultimate death by old age. His wife inherited a number of slaves, Lee freed them.
His other qualities were beyond reproach. He was a true Christian gentleman. (he was once described as the incarnate King Artur). He was a great and greatly loved military commander. His devotion to his duty and sense of honor was absolute. Needless to say, he is my number one hero!

If a person were to dislike Robert E. Lee just because of his racist views, that person is just as prejudiced as he was. Today's society is flooded with political correctness, and nobody would dare say anything offensive about a minority group. Racism is intolerable.
Robert E. Lee fought for a very predjudiced society, but he wasn't fighting for predjudice. He wasn't fighting to keep slaves. He was fighting for Virginia, and its rights.
Yes, Lee did share many of the racist views of the majority of his community. He was raised to think of slaves as being inadequate to be free, or whatever else southerners in those days thought. He was raised this way, just as you were raised to think racism a horrid crime.
But people are not admired or hated for doing things the same as everyone else. They are admired for doing things that others didn't. Lee was a great military commander, and his success in his field was admirable. He was the most successful general of Confederate forces. He is to be admired because of his success, even if by our standards he was fighting for the wrong thing.

Lee was a great soldier and a patriot. He was torn between his duty to the Army of the United States and his obligation to the state of Virginia. He was a man of his time, and may have been a slaveowner, but it is possible to admire him without accepting everything he ever did.
