Motherboards are the most complex and essential part of the modern PC. The motherboard's main job is to hold the computer's microprocessor chip and let everything else connect to it. Everything that runs the computer or enhances its performance is either part of the motherboard or plugs into it via a slot or port.

Not only do they hold the chipsets that pass data from peripherals, drives and memory to the processor, they also provide slots and ports for all your other system components and the circuits through which all data must pass. Perhaps surprisingly then, motherboards get very little respect in the computing press as compared to other components. They are perpetually the team player and not the star of the show, and are generally priced as such.

A motherboard is the central or primary circuit board making up a complex electronic system, such as a computer. A typical computer is built with the microprocessor, main memory, and other basic components on the motherboard. Other components of the computer such as external storage, control circuits for video display and sound, and peripheral devices are typically attached to the motherboard via ribbon cables, other cables, and power connectors.

Hi,

A mother board is to a computer what an intelligent frame would be for a car.

This is the physical component (with circuitry) that everything gets attached to.

The microprocessor, memory, sound cards, video cards, DVD drives, Hard drives etc.

It is the heart of the computers electrical and the computers communication subsystems.

Its the one that's married to Father board.
Seriously it is the big main board in the CPU that nearly everything else plugs into, a sort of Spagetti junction if you like!
