These are older movies:

The Night of The Demon - dana Andrews, Peggy Cummins ( 1957)

The Haunting - Clair Bloom, Julie Harris, Richard Johnson (1963)

Poltergeist (1982)

Three Val Lewton Movies
1) I walked With A Zombie (1943)
2) The Cat People (1942)
3) The Leopard Man (1943)
Extremely well done, very atmospheric and creepy, and worth the time to see.

The Night Of The Living Dead. It was the first of the zombie movies and still the best.

Another scary movie was Hellraiser II for its image of Hell along with the notion that once you had crossed over the barrier in your mind you could never get back.

In the same vein the first Nightmare on Elm Street broke ground with deamons coming from within your own dreams. And you have to admit that Freddy was one very scary dude.

I'll end by tossing in Event Horizon. I've definitely got a thing about parallel realities and the horrors that are only a few steps away if you make the wrong move.

"Showgirls ... absolutely frightening"

Sorry ... I couldn't resist ...

I don't watch scary movies often, but I think the scariest movie I've ever seen is maybe Poltergeist? But I saw that when I was just a kid, so I don't really remember it ... the "scary" movies I watch are mostly psychological thrillers, and not what some would typically consider scary ... the ones that crossed through my mind before Poltergeist were White Noise, Final Destination (I LOVE that movie) and The Shining.

Not the scariest; but the best movie that meant for that category:
The Ring - (09 out of 10)

And it is pretty much scary too.

Ties. Alien,or Aliens.First time U see either.Jaws first time u see It. As far as the Exorcist goes, special affects now make it seem fake and silly.,But when it came out, lines formed around theaters, and coming out, with folks barfing, just like Linda Blair.

Hostel... most scary movies don't even bother me, but the gruesome things going on in it made it the scariest thing I've ever seen.
