There are two different branches of "art philosophy." The first is aesthetics. This is broader and deals with the nature of beauty. In many ways, this overlaps with ethics and epistemology. Discussion in this field tends to turn on whether "beauty" is an objective or subjective concept. The second area is the philosophy of art. This has to do with defining "what is art" and if and why art is important. While this does overlap significantly with aesthetics, it also looks more at the social implications of art and "art" that may not be "aesthetically pleasing."

If you want to be an art philosopher though, you need a solid basis in philosophy generally, because it all builds on it self. The second thing you need to do is define what aspect of art philosophy you are interest in. Any larger university library will have many books on aesthetics and the philosophy of art.

Look up "Aesthetics" online for general introductions. Then read Kant's Critique of Judgement. It's arguably the world's greatest work on the philosophy of art (otherwise known as aesthetics). But read it slowly. Here's a link: http://etext.library.adelaide.edu.au/k/kant/immanuel/k16j/ .

There is nothing that you can do as a philosopher of art / aestheticist. I'm a graduate of philosophy and I just think. But if you don't believe in learning for it's own sake, then you probably wouldn't enjoy reading about the philosophy of art.

Just act like you know alot about art. That's all any of these philosophers do. It's obviously a good racket cause some of them get paid good money to feed people a line of bullsh#t.
